Laser Sintering (SLM Metal Frameworks)

In laser sintering (SLM), metal powder is melted layer by layer by laser according to the digital design to form the framework. We use it for porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges and implant bar frameworks as a production route that needs no wax-up or casting.

Indications

When to choose it

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and bridge frameworks
  • Multi-unit bridge frameworks
  • Implant bar and hybrid prosthesis frameworks
  • Metal framework work received through a digital workflow

Points to discuss with the laboratory

  • For long-span implant bars, passive fit depends on the accuracy of the impression; proceeding to production without a verification jig is not recommended.
  • Surfaces where supports attach need finishing; very fine details may be thickened in the design.

For the dentist

Cast-free production

Because there are no wax-up, investment or casting steps, the risk of casting porosity and shrinkage is reduced.

Form true to the design

Connector cross-sections and veneering space are produced exactly as defined in the design.

One-piece bar

Implant bars are produced in one piece; no soldering of segments is needed.

What we need when you send a case

  • Intraoral scan or impression, opposing arch and bite registration
  • Porcelain veneering plan and shade (VITA guide)
  • For implant bars: implant system, multi-unit type and verified model
  • Patient's known metal sensitivity

Production process

  1. Framework designA cut-back anatomical framework is designed, leaving even space for the veneering porcelain.
  2. Orientation and supportsThe part is positioned on the build platform and support structures are added.
  3. Laser sinteringMetal powder is melted layer by layer by laser according to the design.
  4. Heat treatment and cleaningThe part undergoes stress-relief heat treatment, supports are removed and the surface is cleaned.
  5. Fit checkThe framework is checked on the model for seating and veneering space.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a clinical difference between sintered and cast metal?

Clinical use and porcelain veneering are similar to a cast framework. The difference is the production method: the framework is produced directly from the digital design. Ask us about the alloy type used.

For which work is sintering preferred?

Preferred for work where digital design offers an advantage, such as multi-unit bridge frameworks and implant bars. It can also be used for single crowns; the method is chosen according to the case plan.

Can a sintered framework be adjusted at the try-in?

Minor adjustments can be made at the framework try-in; avoid grinding that would reduce the veneering space. If there is a clear misfit, the framework is remade.
